Ransomware appeared on the horizon long before 2020, but has arguably taken the cyber-threat landscape by storm over the past six months. Threat groups have adopted new tactics for cyber extortion―most notably, incorporating data breaches into ransomware attacks. They have also revamped old tactics, while functioning like well-organized enterprises and seeking high payouts. Some groups have pooled their resources and expertise, or found innovative ways to reap bigger profits, even as ransomware attacks using “traditional” methods continue to bring success. The new breed of cyber extortion attacks should prompt an overhaul of incident response playbooks and mitigation measures.
