Weekly Intelligence Summary 11 June

June 11, 2021

The notorious Russia-based ransomware group “REvil” (aka Sodinokibi) has been blamed for the latest high-profile ransomware attack, on the world’s largest meat supplier. JBS Foods’ operations were temporarily disrupted at multiple facilities globally, renewing fears of another commodity shortage just weeks after “DarkSide”―another likely Russia-based group―had infamously disrupted Colonial Pipeline operations in the US. The private and government sectors are struggling to address the escalating ransomware extortion crisis, which has affected critical infrastructure and left significant economic consequences. Despite the US government’s passing of an executive order aimed at strengthening cyber-security defenses, REvil is apparently barreling onward: The group plans to abandon its recent tendency of avoiding US-based attacks.
