Weekly Intelligence Summary 21 May

May 21, 2021

A “Conti” ransomware attack on Ireland’s healthcare system, the Health Service Executive (HSE), significantly delayed the delivery of medical laboratory results and affected many outpatient services. HSE was forced to disable its networks in an attempt to minimize the damage. This and the recent attack on US fuel provider Colonial Pipeline Company serve as significant reminders of the effect ransomware can have on critical services, and the fallout of a cyber attack on everyday life. Health service providers and other critical organizations continue to be popular targets for ransomware operators, despite many ransomware developers denouncing such targeting.
