Weekly Intelligence Summary 01 May 2020

May 1, 2020

From January to April 2020 the Vietnamese state-linked cyber-threat group “APT32” conducted intrusion attacks on Chinese entities, likely to collect intelligence on COVID-19 developments in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Targets included the provincial government of Wuhan, as well as the Chinese Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM). APT32 sent victims spearphishing emails that loaded and deployed the “METALJACK” backdoor malware. This is likely the first publicly reported instance of cyber espionage tied to the COVID-19 pandemic.
