Weekly Intelligence Summary 02 October 2020

October 2, 2020

Ransomware encrypted and disabled the systems of Universal Health Services (UHS) hospitals in the US this week, in yet another example of threat actors targeting the healthcare sector. The attack disrupted management of patient health information and records, and forced the diversion of incoming patients and ambulances to nearby hospitals. Although healthcare entities are frequent victims of ransomware attacks and data breaches, this event is significant in two ways: A potential return of the “Ryuk” ransomware, which was thought to have been replaced but has likely come back with increased capabilities, and a demonstrated real-world impact of ransomware. Healthcare entities will probably continue to remain a significant target of cybercriminals and Ryuk into the mid-term future (between three months and one year).
