In the spotlight this week: A new ideologically motivated threat group, “CyberWare”, has been observed using ransomware in wiper attacks against companies it believes are conducting scams. According to the group’s correspondence with cyber-security researchers, CyberWare claims to be using a custom variant of ransomware, dubbed MilkmanVictory, in attacks that also employ distributed denial of service (DDoS) on victims’ websites. The group uses the ransomware to destroy the data of targeted companies, rather than stealing/encrypting it and offering it back for a price. CyberWare’s hacktivist intentions are supported by its claimed connections to the “Anonymous” movement.
